Senior Structural Engineer

McCrae Consulting Engineers are a Fire, Civil and Structural Engineering Consultancy located near Dundrum, Dublin 14. With a constantly growing work load, we have an opening for a Senior Structural Engineer. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a broad variety of projects which includes small alterations to protected structures to multimillion Euro new developments.  The project range includes Commercial, Retail, Leisure, Residential, Educational and Industrial throughout the country.

The candidate will have responsibility for all aspects of design and co-ordination of their projects. Where necessary they will also be responsible for co-ordinating the activities of draftspersons and junior Engineers.

The successful Structural Engineer will be responsible for developing designs and working as part of a team whilst liaising with Clients, Contractors and Design Teams. Reporting to a Director, the candidate’s duties will include taking the technical lead on projects, both carrying out and reviewing/checking designs by others, liaising with Clients, design team and contractor and supporting the growth and development of the Team.

This is an ideal opportunity for a near or recently Chartered Engineer to take a leading role in a developing consultancy and develop their career beyond the role of a project engineer.


  • Minimum of 5-10 years post graduate experience in a consultancy role.
  • A degree in Civil/Structural Engineering (level 8 or higher).
  • Engineers Ireland membership, ideally chartered or near chartered.
  • Excellent communication skills, especially the ability to translate designs into comprehensive drawing/information for construction.
  • Experience of reinforced concrete design, structural steel, timber and masonry using the Eurocodes.
  • Experience of design of sustainable urban drainage systems and general building drainage systems.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the Building Regulations and Technical Guidance Documents.
  • Demonstrate an ability to be proactive to the ever changing scenarios experienced in modern construction.
  • Ability to work independently, take responsibility for their own work and take the initiative when necessary.
  • Experience in structural surveying and assessment, especially on protected structures.
  • Excellent analytical and numerical skills and attention to detail.
  • AutoCAD skills essential and experience of using Revit would be an advantage. Practical knowledge of Microsoft Office and structural design and analysis software packages.
  • Own transport essential. Must have fluent English and must be eligible to work in Ireland.


  • Undertake Structural Engineering design on projects, co-ordinating design work of junior engineer and drafts person as necessary.
  • The production of clear and comprehensive drawings, reports, calculations and specifications.
  • Manage and meet project delivery timelines while meeting agreed quality and costs.
  • Attending and participating constructively in project meetings in house and with Clients, Architects, Surveyors and Contractors.
  • Construction monitoring and reporting.
  • Practise development in terms of both quality and portfolio.
